“Oliver” is an adorable 8-month old baby whose teen-aged parents are doing their best to meet his needs. Oliver’s mother left home at 16 to get away from a toxic situation. She has completed her GED and is currently taking classes at COCC. She is also providing in-home care for a neighbor’s child to bring in some extra money. The family has a lot on their plate right now, but loves their baby boy very much.

Thanks to Hayden Homes, “Oliver” and seven other babies from MountainStar’s Healing Children program slept safely and soundly last week in brand new cribs donated by Hayden Homes.

During the shopping spree, members of the Hayden Home team and Robyn Lopez Melton, Hispanic Outreach Coordinator and Program Specialist with MountainStar, set out for visits to Walmart and Costco and they returned with eight cribs and mattresses, and supplies including crib bumpers, blankets, diapers and wipes, stroller, baby gates, bathtubs, and more.

Neighbors can help families

Knowing the neighbors helps many Bend families

By Alandra Johnson / The Bulletin

Finding the right neighborhood was critically important to Cricket Kadoch when she and her family moved to Bend six years ago. While they could have chosen a house with lots of land, they opted for the River Rim development in southwest Bend, where the new homes were built cozily close together. Kadoch says it has been a great place to raise their kids, now 7 and 5. She feels like she knows her neighbors, from families with similar-age kids to couples who have been married for more than 50 years.

Kadoch and her neighbors help provide a sense of security for one another. She feels comfortable letting her kids ride their bikes around the neighborhood. In turn, she watches out for other children. Kadoch has been known to bring over meals or shovel driveways when her neighbors are in need.

“We can all use each other,” said Kadoch. “It lends to a feeling of safety.”

Kadoch, however, is in the minority when it comes to neighborhood connections. Just 19 percent of Americans surveyed in 2009 by the Pew Research Center said they knew all of their neighbors; 24 percent said they knew most, 29 percent said they knew some and 28 percent said they knew none.

Getting to know neighbors takes effort. It can be more difficult than it was a generation or two ago, when people spent less time watching TV and parents encouraged kids to go outside to play and not come home until dark. Those days are gone, but neighborhood connections can still be vitally important, especially for families. Read the rest of this entry »

If you could make a Wish Come True for someone, would you?

Well, that’s exactly what the Boise based Wish Granters are doing. This non-profit organization grants wishes to adults who have terminal illnesses. What will these Wishes be? “We won’t know the answer to that until we meet with a person and ask them,” says Wish Granters Founder and Executive Director Doug Raper. “It could be to fly a family member in to see them, it could be to take their kids to DisneyLand before they are unable to, it could be a television to watch while they are home bound. It could be just about anything.”

Hayden Homes has joined ranks with Wish Granters by doing what we do best. Build! Our Newest Playhouse is on the auction block, and for a dollar you could win a chance and help make a Wish Come True for someone with a  terminal illness.

June 10-19, 2011 – Playhouse Auction & Raffle

The Wish Granters Playhouse Auction and Raffle will be located at Lowe’s on Overland Road in Boise. Tickets are $1 each. If you would like to join this effort to help terminally ill adults in the Boise area, stop by.

If you are not in the area, but still would like to help out,

Congratulations to Tim and Sarah of Roseburg, OR, who will enjoy an unforgettable tour of the beautiful Umpqua Valley wineries! The couple were notified this week of their win, and are shown below picking up their prize at the RiverCrest model home in Roseburg.

Their Oregon Wine Country Tour will center around the Hayden Hometown of Roseburg, in the heart of the Umpqua Valley. This region is the oldest wine producing area in the state of Oregon, and all the wineries in the valley are family owned and operated. Their personal tour will feature a pickup and drop off, wine tasting 101 class, a gourmet lunch, tour of four wineries in the area, possible barrel tastings, and more! Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?!

Timothy, Sarah & Family

Cheers, Tim & Sarah – we hope you enjoy yourselves!

Keep checking our website for more opportunities to win another northwest experience - it may not be a wine tour, but it will definitely be something just as amazing!
